miles cain is possibly the hardest grafting musician ever. now based in york, miles first came to tollbooth's attention as a result of a number of eve & the garden gigs in the north east. one of the greatest qualities an artist can possess is a tenacity to create and miles' drive to keep extending himself as an artist is enviable. writer, poet, songwriter, preacher, teacher, campaigner - communication in whatever form is a fascination for miles. 2004 saw the release of miles' first full length album 'different destinations' recorded sporadically over three years at tollboothmusic, both at the reading facility and at the tbm studios in doncaster. 'different destinations' is a snapshot of some of the vast range of subjects that influence and drive miles' music. from the call for a new society in 'waking up with the house on fire' to the tone poem 'it's amazing to be here', the album showcases miles' fascination with an immense range of influences from literature and history. though miles is known predominantly as a solo acoustic performer, working at tollbooth has given miles the opportunity to explore a much bigger and more diverse sonic canvas. "one of the great thing about working with miles is his enthusiasm for new ideas and sounds and his willingness to embrace influences from a wide range of genres. miles has treated this album like a truly blank canvas; an approach which has been both highly welcome and deeply refreshing". using a diverse mix of looped and live drums; ethnic percussion; electric guitars; ebow; state of the art synthesis engines; and a mix of synthesized and instrument basses; miles and paul a davies have teamed up to create a wide variety of sonic landscapes. "working with miles is fun - great fun - though we both take our roles in this process very seriously, we also both retain an amazing joy for the whole creative process and how we can best bend it and squeeze it to serve the music better. sessions with miles are always a very fulfilling time" quotations from paul d, tollboothmusic |
